Copan Birding
Honduras currently
has over 700 species recorded within its territory, including
one endemic, the Honduran Emerald. There are substantial
forested
regions in and out of protected areas that comprise an array
of habitats, including lowland, mid-elevation and cloud forests,
thorn-scrub forest, wetland ecosystems and a variety of other
micro habitats.
The Copan region
is a year-round birding paradise, with over 330 species
identified, from 51 families. A simple two hour walk from downtown
to the Copan River and back typically rewards the seasoned birder
with
40
or 50
species. There are several highly respected birding guides
in town, whom we are pleased to recommend to our visitors.
Oropendula
nests
appear seasonally
at the park entrance. |

As word
gets out about the quality of the birding in our valley, more
and more visitors are planning 3 to 5 day birding trips that
include our park, birding in the valley, as well as trips to
the diverse environments of the surrounding mountains. Nearby birding
hotspots include Hacienda
San Lucas, Finca
El Cisne, Malcote
Nature Reserve, and Finca
Miramundo.
